Starting from September 12, the Bisse d’Ayent will feature on the new 100 Franc note of Switzerland. This iconic image highlights the Torrent-Croix passage and its wooden channels built into the rock face in 1448. These channels were initially abandoned in the early 19th century but were later restored in the 1990s using traditional techniques.
The Grand Bisse of Ayent, constructed in 1442, still serves as a vital irrigation channel for the local villages. It originally drew water near the Tseuzier dam. The part of the bisse immortalized on the new banknote represents not only a feat of ancient engineering but also a symbol of local heritage.
During our hike, you’ll see the remarkable work of our ancestors, who built the bisse with their bare hands. The passage from Les Follés along the rocky ridge is an exhilarating experience, though not for the faint-hearted. For those prone to vertigo, an alternative route is available via the “Samarin” bus stop.
The journey includes a 95-meter illuminated tunnel, offering a unique perspective of the bisse. Remember to watch your head as you pass through it. A platform inside the tunnel provides a magnificent view of the entire restored installation.
We look forward to sharing this incredible experience with you. Don’t forget to bring your enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure!
